Behavior Intervention

Behavior intervention is used to reinforce positive behaviors and work to change behaviors that may negatively impact students' lives and experiences. A couple of ways to address behavioral concerns are listed below.

Functional Behavior Plan

To ensure students reap the benefits of the education system, assessment of student behavior can be necessary. When appropriate, students may require a functional behavior plan (FBA). A team of professionals, teachers, parents, and the student are involved in the process of developing a FBA.

  1. Identification of behaviors

  2. Information gathering

  3. Information analysis

  4. Hypothesis development

  5. Development of plan

  6. Implementation of plan

  7. Monitoring and evaluation

An FBA is a part of an individualized education program (IEP) to help students meet their education and social goals for appropriate development.

Manifestation Determination Review

A manifestation determination review (MDR) is mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) when a student engages in a behavior that may result in disciplinary action. An MDR is to review whether the behavior is a manifestation of the student's disability or the school's failure to implement the student's IEP.
